Agriculture

Advising on land use planning at all levels

Overview

The need for sustainable resource management is increasingly urgent. Demand for agricultural commodities is rising rapidly as the world’s population grows. Agriculture’s deep connections to the world economy, human societies and biodiversity make it one of the most important frontiers for conservation around the globe. The sustainability of cocoa production is very essential to many stakeholders including governments, producers, businesses and consumers. Different measures have been adopted to improve yields while enhancing the livelihoods of farmers.

Why it matters

When agricultural operations are sustainably managed, they can preserve and restore critical habitats, help protect watersheds, and improve soil health and water quality. However, unsustainable practices have serious impacts on people and the environment.

What NDF is doing

Experience and research over the years have shown that not much impact is achieved in solving any environmental problem by limiting work to that particular environmental problem. For example we cannot solve forest degradation by only working with timber companies. NDF is seeking to work with cocoa farmers as well as other land uses that affect the forest. The essence is that most of the environmental problems occur at a landscape level and therefore one land use affects another land use.
