Project: “Living with Wildlife: Improving Livelihoods in the Mole eco-logical Landscape”

Introduction

The Nature and Development Foundation (NDF), an environmental non-governmental organization (NGO) is inviting qualified and interested person(s)/organizations to express interest in evaluating activities implemented so far under the ‘Living With Wildlife Project’.

Background

Nature and Development Foundation (NDF) is implementing the Living with Wildlife: Improving Livelihoods in the Mole Ecological Landscape Project which seeks to empower park-fringing communities for increased community benefits and participatory wildlife management. Funding for the project is from the UK Government through the Illegal Wildlife Trade Challenge Fund (IWTCF) and implementation is by a consortium made up of Nature and Development Foundation (Lead), CK-Tedam University and the Mole National Park (MNP) of the Wildlife Division of the Forestry Commission.  

The expected project impact is to contribute to decrease pressure on wildlife population in the Mole National Park with the benefit of reducing poverty among park-fringing communities. The project is training and supporting men and women in the Chakali-Sungmaaluu and the Moagduri Wuntanluri Kuwomsaasi (MWK) CREMAs in the Wa East and Mapourigu Moagduri Districts respectively to implement nature-based sustainable livelihood measures that will reduce poverty and inequality and poaching of wildlife in the landscape.

The project commenced in April 2023 and is expected to end in March 2026. Currently, the project is in mid way into the implementation. Thus, a midterm evaluation is required to measure progress against the project’s objectives, to ascertain whether the project is achieving its intended outcomes.  

Expected Outcomes of the Project

  • Better farming and increased yield
  • Increased income to community members
  • Communities and park management relationship renewed.
  • Increased law enforcement and patrols in the area.
  • Decreased poaching pressure on the wildlife in the Mole National Park. 

Interventions Implemented So Far

  • Safe and efficient shea nut collection  
  • sustainable honey production.
  • sustainable rodent farming.
  • Agroforestry.
  • Capacity building of executives of the Chakali-Sungmaaluu and MWK CREMAs.  

Objectives of the Evaluation

The evaluation will focus on the following objectives:

  • To assess the extent to which the project has achieved its intended outcomes and objectives.
  • To evaluate the impact of the project on local communities and wildlife conservation efforts.
  • To examine the sustainability of project interventions and their long-term viability.
  • To analyze the use of resources and identify any areas of inefficiency.
  • To identify best practices, challenges, and lessons learned to inform future projects.

Expected Output 

A comprehensive report with insights into the project’s achievements, challenges, and areas for improvement, with the goal of refining strategies and enhancing future outcomes.

Scope

The evaluation will cover the following aspects:

  • Review of project activities, implementation processes and beneficiaries including community members, park management, and project staff.
  • Evaluation of the project’s outcomes against its objectives, using both quantitative and qualitative data.
  • Examination of strategies in place to ensure the project’s long-term sustainability.
  • Provision of actionable recommendations for improving project outcomes

Field Visits:

Site visits to communities in the Chakali-Sungmaaluu and MWK CREMAs to conduct interviews with key stakeholders, including CREMA Executives, community members, project staff, and park authorities is essential for credible data collection. 

Who can apply/ Team/Qualification?

The assignment must be carried out by a qualified individual(s) with appropriate experience in similar research work(s) and must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree. A master’s degree or higher will be an added advantage

Timeframe

A total number of 15 Man-days is allowed. The study should be completed preferably by 31st October 2024.
